Container truckers are planning on holding a rally at Canada Place at noon today to protest an attempt by the provincial government to legislate them back to work.

B.C. government announced earlier this week it was preparing back-to-work legislation for the unionized truckers represented by Unifor. Legislation could be introduced as early as Monday, March 24.

The B.C. Federation of Labour is calling for a mass demonstration in support of the truckers.

More than 1,400 truckers have been off the job at Port Metro Vancouver for almost two weeks now.

More than 1,200 non-unionized container-truck drivers with the United Truckers Association have been on strike since February 26. They were joined on March 10 by approximately 250 unionized truck drivers, who voted 98 per cent to strike.

The strike is holding up billions of dollars worth of goods and affecting many local businesses that are now also racking up daily storage fees.

The government says it’s costing the economy $885 million a week.

A 14-point plan was introduced to resolve an ongoing strike last week, but union management said there were “some glaring holes in it.”
