SASKATOON – The first day of spring on Thursday may feel more like winter for people in Saskatoon.

After a warm stretch that’s brought temperatures to or above freezing the last ten days, some cooler weather is moving in to kickoff the spring season.

It officially begins on Thursday at 10:57 a.m. in Saskatchewan.

You may want to put away the winter parkas, but don’t be deceived.

A few centimeters of snow is possible on Thursday afternoon and evening as a cooler airmass moves in with some strong wind gusts.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

It appears as though Saskatoon may be in the mighty grips of the arctic air for quite some time.

Current models are suggesting cool temperatures well below seasonal sticking around right through to the end of March.

Long-range seasonal forecast models are hinting at a colder than normal spring, but a noticeable difference might be felt by mid-April as average daytime highs are expected to sit in the positive single digits with a few days above seasonal.

If you’re getting frustrated with winter, think back to last year when the snowpack on the first day of spring was 41 centimetres – that’s over six times the amount of snow Saskatoon presently has.

Last year, the Bridge City didn’t see six centimetre snow depths until the end of April.

Even more good news, a warm May and a sizzling summer could be something to look forward to.
