Shaw phone service down in Vancouver, Victoria

A massive Shaw outage affecting central B.C., Vancouver and Vancouver Island left unknown numbers of customers without telephone service Friday morning.

As of noon, customers in Metro Vancouver and Victoria were reporting their service had been down for anywhere from two to four hours.

Frustrated users were turning to Twitter to share information. Telus customers were reporting that they couldn’t contact Shaw customers, and Shaw customers were getting no dial tone.

Shaw posted a notice for its affected customers Friday morning, apologizing for the outage: "We are currently experiencing a phone outage impacting customers in Central BC, Vancouver and Vancouver Island. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused our customers."

The service outage appeared to be the result of one phone switch, Shaw said. According to the notice, television and Internet service were not impacted, Shaw to Shaw calls were not affected and all 911 calls were being rerouted.

They hoped to resolve the problem by Friday evening.
