Father and son killed in avalanche on the shores of Lake Louise identified

A Parks Canada official says the avalanche risk was high in the Lake Louise, Alta. area where a father and son were killed in a slide while tobogganing this month.

The bodies of a 33-year old Montreal man Gabriel Mironov and his 11-year-old son Oliver were recovered Saturday, but the RCMP says they may have been buried for almost a week.

Don Mironov confirmed the deaths of his only son and grandson yesterday.

A spokesperson for the school has confirmed that Oliver attended Selwyn House School in Westmount.

“Out of extreme respect for the family, we are not issuing a statement at this time.”

Nigel Penney, the director of the Westmount Science Camp Oliver attended, also expressed his condolences.

“Oliver was a bright, bright lad,” Penney  told Global News. “We’re deeply, deeply sorry to hear the news.”

“I remember the father, how wonderful he was with his son, very gentle.”

The pair was only reported missing on Friday, but hadn’t actually been since last Sunday when they rented the toboggan.

It’s been a bad weekend for snow slides.

A 36-year-old man from Lloydminster, Sask. died of injuries he suffered Friday night in an avalanche near Blue River, B.C., about halfway between Kamloops and Jasper, Alta.

And a 38-year-old man from Calgary was critically injured Saturday when he and some fellow skiers triggered an avalanche in Alberta’s Banff National Park.
