More charges laid against Manitoban in Ontario dash cam crash

WINNIPEG – A Manitoba man faces additional charges in Ontario after a dashboard camera video of a highway collision appeared to show him holding a cellphone.

Christopher Lord, 36, from La Broquerie, Man., is now charged under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act with driving a motor vehicle with a hand-held communication device, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Friday.

Lord had already been charged with failure to yield after the March 1 crash at Highway 17 and Highway 17A west of Kenora. Lord’s pickup truck, pulling a large trailer, made a left turn onto the highway in front of a vehicle driven by Ralph Ireland of Sioux Lookout, Ont.

The frightening crash was recorded on Ireland’s dash cam and the video posted on YouTube.

Close examination of the video shows the driver of the pickup truck holding something to his ear.

The video “provided further evidence” that led to the additional charge being laid Thursday, the OPP said.

Lord, Ireland and his wife suffered minor injuries in the crash.
