UPDATE: Calgary police skeptical new ‘Creature Sightings’ Facebook page has a new mandate

A Facebook page that was shut down and under investigation by Calgary police has returned with a new name.

CALGARY- A Facebook page that was shut down by the social network because it mocked homeless people has resurfaced under a new name.

Facebook removed the Calgary-based ‘Creature Sightings’ page earlier this week, after receiving a number of complaints.

The group is now back, under the name ‘Creat Uresightings’, and it claims it has a new mandate: promoting awareness of the plight of vulnerable Calgarians.

“If that’s really the intent of this site, then good on them,” says Kevin Brookwell, a CPS spokesperson.

“But I look at the name of the site and I question the motive,” Brookwell adds. “If you’re out there supporting vulnerable Calgarians why would you call your site ‘creature sightings?”

The following comment has been posted by the page’s creator:

“Sueing facebook for deleting my group creature sightings. Its preventing homeless awarness cuz the creatures look unsightly. Most people get sick or offended just by looking at these people, well here it is people and creature sighting will continue as long as fb snobs have the power to prevent awareness.”

Group members, many of whom are high school or university students, post pictures and video of so-called ‘creature sightings.’

Calgary police began investigating after receiving complaints about the original page, but after reviewing the posts, have not decided to press charges.

However, Brookwell says police will continue to monitor the site.

“If we see the same thing happening that we saw before, then we’ll do what we need to do,” he says.
