Men killed in U.S. hang glider crash identified as pilot, passenger from Canada

A cloud of smoke is seen coming from the wreckage of the light sport aircraft in Polihale Tuesday morning. Kauai County

LIHUE, Hawaii – The two men killed when a light sport aircraft crashed on a mountain on a Hawaiian island were the pilot and his passenger, a tourist visiting from Canada, police said Thursday.

Tuesday’s fiery crash killed pilot Gerry Charlebois, 54, and Mark McKenzie, 53, of Pickering, Ontario, Kauai police said.

The aircraft crashed on the side of a mountain, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.

The aircraft -an Evolution Trikes Revo – is registered to Birds in Paradise LLC, a company founded by Charlebois that markets itself to visiting travellers. Federal regulations prohibit the aircraft from being used for tours or thrill rides.

The company advertises scenic flights for tourists described as introductory flight lessons rather than aerial tours.
