UPDATE: Mother identifies 19-year-old killed in crash southwest of Edmonton

EDMONTON – The victim of a fatal crash southwest of Edmonton is being identified as Anthonny Andre Gabriel of Winfield, Alberta, by his mother.

The 19-year-old was killed Thursday afternoon when the small vehicle he was driving collided with a semi on Highway 39, between Range Roads 31 and 30 near Warburg.

His passenger, a 20-year-old man, was trapped inside the car. Fire crews were able to pull him out; and STARS Air Ambulance then flew him to the University of Alberta Hospital. His injuries were said to be potentially life-threatening.

Gabriel’s mother tells Global Edmonton he suffered a fractured skull, but is now up and walking.

She says she doesn’t know what caused the crash, but believes her son was on his way home from work at Arctic Spas in Thorsby when it happened.

Highway 39 at Warburg was closed for several hours Thursday afternoon. It was reopened shortly before 9 p.m.
