GUELPH, Ont. – The University of Guelph is set to close two satellite campuses in eastern Ontario in an effort to cut costs.

The university says intake to academic programs at its Alfred and Kemptville campuses will be suspended for the fall semester while a full closure is slated for the end of 2015.

It says enrolment at both campuses – which it has managed since 1997 – has been stagnant while operating costs have increased

Currently registered students at both campuses – 180 at Kemptville and 61 at Alfred – will be able to complete their academic programs.

Research projects at both campuses will also be completed or relocated to Guelph or the university’s Ridgetown campus by the end of 2015.

University president Alistair Summerlee says the institution is operating in an era of scarce resources and must make difficult decisions.
