Calgary public schools short – up to $31 million for upcoming school year

File. File / Global News

CALGARY – The Calgary Board of Education is doing the math after the release of Alberta’s provincial budget on March 6.

The CBE estimates as much as a $31 million funding gap and a decline in per-student funding for the fourth consecutive year in 2014-15.

The province increased funding by three per cent to address enrolment growth, but the CBE says other costs, such as inflation, are not accounted for.

The CBE is now working on possible changes and adjustments to balance their budget.

“All the usual portfolios that are discussed at budget time will be reviewed, including fees, transportation, levels of service and allocations to schools,” adds Brad Grundy, chief financial officer and corporate treasurer.
