TORONTO – Toronto car owner Colin Turnbull has taken the unusual step of threatening to vote for Rob Ford in the city’s upcoming mayoral election to help him sell his rare 1991 Nissan Figaro.

“I thought I would jump on his popularity so to speak,” he said. “It seemed like a natural fit to get something to grab people’s attention.”

Turnbull recently posted an advertisement on the free classifieds website Kijiji accompanied by a glorified sign of Ford in the back seat with the slogan: “Buy this car or I will vote for Rob Ford. The fate of Toronto rests in your hands!”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I thought of the slogan in the shower ironically,” Turnbull explained. “There are lot of car ads and it’s a way to stand out.”

Ford made international headlines last year after he admitted to smoking crack cocaine during a “drunken stupor.”

He has since been the butt of jokes on American late night television and even made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel earlier this month.

Turnball admits he’s no fan of Ford but hopes the mayor’s notoriety can help him fetch a cool $14,000 for his Figaro.

“You see Ford on the Kimmel Show, so they’re going to use his popularity for their own means.”

The Toronto marketer bought the vehicle four years ago and has been slowly restoring it since then, adding new tires, brakes and shocks last year.

“It’s a unique car that was made in Japan and they had a lottery for people to own it.”

The retro car was first introduced to the general public at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show and only 20,000 rolled out of the production line.
