Saskatoon lays out its snow melt plan

Watch the video above: city crews are set to deal with the snow melt in Saskatoon

SASKATOON – The City of Saskatoon held a news conference on Monday afternoon to ask for cooperation from the public and to lay out a plan to deal with melting snow and ice.

The City will be monitoring ditches, ponds and culverts with emergency staff on standby.

Civic crews will use boiler trucks to clear snow and ice from catch basins so the melted water can drain straight into the sewers.

City officials are confident the storm sewer can handle the flow resulting from any snow melt.

“All of the catch basins in Saskatoon – those are the drains on the street – there’s over 12,000 of them and they’ve all been prioritized based on how deep they can flood, which ones would cause problems first if plugged,” said Andrew Hildebrandt, the city’s storm water utility manager.

“Also the ones in priority intersections. Those have all been identified and they’re part of a strategic snow melt plan for keeping those catch basins clear and being proactive and ensuring they are clear as the melt progresses.”

The city is also asking homeowners to do their part, clearing snow and ice from downspouts and near the foundation of their homes.

Motorists are warned to slow down and drive cautiously because it’s hard to tell how deep they are and what’s under them.
