TORONTO — Actress, comedian and singer Sandra Bernhard wants people to put their mobile devices down and talk to each other.
“I don’t like some of the conversations that get going on social media because I don’t think they’re realistic,” she explained. “I don’t think you can have a conversation with somebody that you don’t know, that you don’t see, that you can’t hear their voice.”
Bernhard, appearing on Global’s The Morning Show, said Friday she is put off by wars-of-words on Twitter and other forms of social media.
“What are you fighting about when you can’t even have a proper conversation? We speak for a reason. This is part of the human experience,” Bernhard said.
The 58-year-old, whose TV credits include Roseanne, Will & Grace and the new series Switched at Birth, continues to perform her stand-up act on stages around the world. (She’s at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts just north of Toronto on March 7 and 8.)
She’s not sure how long she will continue, though.
“Honestly, there are days when I’m just like, ‘what are you doing?’ Your emotions take over, you’re tired, you’re burned out,” Bernhard admitted. “You take a short break and move through it.”
What keeps her going is knowing that she has something to say. “I think what I do is important,” she added.
Still, Bernhard said she would welcome a steady gig in front of cameras.
“Right now I would love to end up part of an ensemble on a TV show,” she said, “because it would be nice to have a little bit of a break from always being on the road.”
