BLOG: Morning News Rewind – March 7

Snowmobile drag racing is taking place this weekend at Marquis Downs. Eric Beck / Global News

Snowmobiles, chainmaille, the sports and leisure show and workshops at Beaver Creek were featured on the Morning News for Friday, March 7.

Interpretive workshops at Beaver Creek interests Jessica

A hidden gem right in Beaver Creek. This program sounds very interactive for an afternoon out with the family. It sounds very hands on and educational with activities like tracing animal tracks to learning what kind they are.

This weekend is expected to be in the positives, so get out there and explore nature!

It’s time to get ready for summer as Joelle found out more about the sports and leisure show taking place this weekend in Saskatoon

The Sports and Leisure show is in town this weekend, and I learned that it’s not exclusively about RV’s and high-powered boats! Howard Closson chairs the event, and filled me in on all the family-friendly activities that take place at the annual exhibition.

Some of the exhibitions and shows that piqued my interest were Wrangler Elisa with “Cold Blooded Adventures” and the Elk Call competition. I was tempted to ask Closson to teach me an elk call in the interview, but I’m sure my efforts would be rather pointless!

That’s not all: The Saskatoon Sports and Leisure show is the second-largest sports show in Western Canada, and it’s all run by volunteers.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

What’s noteworthy about this event is how vital it is to the success of the Saskatoon Wildlife Federation. The organization is a cornerstone of the Saskatchewan lifestyle, and has great programs such as the SRRC Junior Shooting Program, Archery Club and the Hunt 4 Hunger Program, where hunters have the opportunity to bring in excess wild meat to be processed and delivered to the Saskatoon Food Bank.

It’s wonderful to see the people and hunters of Saskatoon truly giving back to their community and sharing the bounty of the land.

Jessice sits down with the owner of Metaldesignz to learn about chainmaille

To be honest, I didn’t really know what chainmaille was.

I knew certain metal vests were made out of chainmaille, but that’s about it. I learned a lot during this interview, including how the producers from the movie Thor randomly contacted Metal Designz to make a costume (or seven) for the movie, very cool!

Melissa headed to Marquis Downs to see snowmobile drag racing action

There is nothing more Canadian to me than making the most out of winter and that’s what we saw this morning with the snow drag racers. This is the biggest event for the racers in the country bringing out the best of the best.

What I found interesting was that truly anyone can do it all you need is a sled and some gear. Ty and his family have been doing it for years so for him it is a family tradition of sorts.

For others, it’s just a great way to spend some time with friends.

Thankfully this weekend promises to be a great one weather-wise making it for perfect conditions for the races.

If you would like to check out the pro and amateur racers the event is on Saturday and Sunday at Marquis Down.
