Heavy snow forecast for Coquihalla Highway

BC Ministry of Transportation

Expect another blast of winter to blanket the Coquihalla Highway.

Environment Canada is forecasting an incoming storm that could dump between 25 to 45 centimeters of snow.

Forecaster Doug Lundquist says the worst should be over by Monday night, but cautions drivers to avoid the highway for the next 24 hours.

The stretch of road has already seen a record amount of snowfall this season,  “unprecedented in the 27 year history of the Coquihalla highway,” said B.C. Transportation Minister, Todd Stone.

It’s also had more avalanche control work than any previous year, with crews dropping more than 130 explosive charges in the area.

All that avalanche control work has blown the ministries normal operating budget out of the water, with an additional $75,000 spent on helicopters and explosives to manage the extreme conditions.

The highway has closed numerous times this season due to avalanches.
