EDMONTON – The local goalie, who made history with a 59 save shutout earlier this year, has inked a two-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers.

The two sides came together on a contract worth just over $2 million per season.

“I’ve got to make the most of this opportunity and try to play the best hockey I’m capable of,” said Scrivens on Monday.

The Spruce Grove native was acquired from the Los Angeles Kings earlier this season for a third round draft pick.

In seven games with the Oilers the 27-year-old has a .940 save percentage and a 2.15 goals against average.

He also endeared himself to many Oilers fans with a 59 save shutout Jan. 29 against the San Jose Sharks.

Scrivens, who was set to become a free agent at the end of the season, feels that the decision to sign with the Oilers is a good one on a number of fronts.

“I’m comfortable here. I made a decision that’s best for me, both career wise and family wise. It’s nice to be able to play at home.”

“It’s always a gamble going to free agency,” he explained. “There are so few jobs in the NHL. In the crease, there’s only 60 jobs, 30 starters. I really don’t know if I would’ve been able to get a better opportunity to establish myself as a go-to guy.”

Still, Scrivens has not been promised the starting job.

“It’s a great opportunity, now the real work begins. I’ve got to start competing with Bryz [Ilya Bryzgalov] for the rest of this year and then carry on from there, and try to come into camp next year and assert myself as the guy.”

“This team is going to play the goaltender that gives them the best chance to win each and every night, and I‘ve got to work hard to try and make sure that that’s me.”
