Controversial developer from Brossard connected to two suspicious fires in Cote-St-Luc

BROSSARD – The city of Cote-St-Luc has been rocked recently by suspicious fires.

Two luxury homes were attacked over a two day period.

On Monday, a building on Tommy Douglas Street was completely destroyed, and just one day earlier, a home on Collins Road was also torched.

Arson is suspected in both events.

The developer of both projects is reportedly 38-year-old Tyronne Candappa, the former president of Brossard-based Tysel Construction and Renovation.

In November 2010, he broke ground on a major condo project on St-Laurent Street along the shoreline near the Champlain Bridge.

The proposed 14-storey “Tysel Tower” promised spectacular views of the river.

The project was halted shortly after construction began.

Candappa’s company filed for bankruptcy leaving about 60 investors out in the cold.

One of the buyers, Dr. Mohuniall Soowamber, lost close to a million dollars in the venture.

“It was my life savings,” he says.

He says he’s not surprised by the recent turn of events.

Dr. Soowamber says Tyronne Candappa has made many enemies in his lifetime.

“All these lawmakers should be after this guy because he’s destroying the lives of a lot of people,” Dr. Soowamber told Global News.

Tyronne Candappa has never faced fraud charges in connection with the condo tower project, but he was arrested in December 2011 with the attempted murder of one of the investors.

Candappa has a scheduled court date next Monday at the Longueuil Courthouse.

Dr. Soowamber hopes the police arson probe in Cote-St-Luc leads into a larger investigation.

“What we want is justice,” he says.

“And we are still hoping to recoup some of our money, one day.”
