Fort McMurray MLA calls for stricter penalties for those caught speeding on Alberta highways

Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo ML A Mike Allen speaks to media on October 28, 2013. Global News

EDMONTON – Fort McMurray MLA Mike Allen wants to crack down on reckless drivers after dozens of deaths and hundreds of collisions on Alberta’s notorious Highway 63.

Allen is seeking public input on a report he tabled in 2012, which called for the twinning of Highway 63 and increased enforcement. More specifically, he’d like to see fines increased.

“To be doing what I consider excessive speeding – 150 plus in a 100 km speed limit – is a $351 fine. If you are someone working in the oil sands or someone working in any job in Fort McMurray right now, $351 is not a significant deterrent.”

Allen also said that according to statistics, about 21 per cent of the fatalities that occur on Highway 63, and 24 per cent of injury injuries, are all related to excessive speeds.

“It’s an important issue, and it’s important to know that this is not just about Highway 63, this is about safety on all Alberta highways,” Allen added.
