It may sound like a good idea, an apple that does not go brown even after being cut and sitting for a while, but a new variety is raising serious concerns about genetic modification in the local apple industry.
The ‘Arctic Apple’ was created in Summerland and is still waiting for government approval. Opponents say the new variety will scare off consumers worried about GMO foods, and potentially have financial consequences for B.C. agriculture.
“The consumers don’t want them, the Growers don’t want them, it will wreck the reputation of our valley,” said nutritionist Heidi Osterman.
The BC Fruit Growers’ Association is on record as opposing the ‘Arctic Apple’.
“We believe the public perception about the apple is that the apple is pure, natural, healthy, and we want to keep that perception to the public,” said Jeet Dukhia, the association’s president.
However, supporters say people should wait for the regulatory process to fully evaluate the variety. The final decision comes from the federal government. An application has been submitted and the apple will undergo a review.
“I think the main thing with genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, around the world are recognized as being scientifically and rigorously approved,” said Ron Cannan, Kelowna-Lake Country MP. “In Canada we have a process, whether it’s canola, or soy, or sugar from sugar beets.”
