NAPANEE, Ont. – A Kingston-area school board says there have been “multiple suspensions” at a Napanee high school over the sharing of inappropriate images by students.

The Limestone District School Board says the suspended students are now under police investigation. The board would not provide a specific number, saying only that it was “fewer than 15.”

Board official Krishna Burra says the images were circulating on social media and by text, and were brought to the school’s attention roughly a week and a half ago.

Burra says it will be up to police to determine “whether or not this type of thing crosses the line into child pornography.”

He says the incident has had a “ripple effect” throughout the community of about 15,000 and many are “traumatized.”

He adds the school will ramp up its efforts to educate students about the pitfalls of social media and texting.

“The concern, whenever you’re talking about this type of incident, is that those images, once you hit ‘send’ and they’re out there, there are very serious consequences,” Burra said.

Students’ digital footprint can affect their university and job prospects, and leave them vulnerable to blackmail, he said.
