Three male secondary school students have been charged with child porn offences for allegedly sharing inappropriate material as reported by School District 73 in Kamloops, according to RCMP.

The three suspects, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, were charged Wednesday with distributing child pornography.

The Kamloops RCMP launched an investigation after a report from the school district.

“While recognizing that this case involves youth under the age of 18 and is of a sensitive and emotional nature, we ask the community to respect this ongoing investigation and to let the judicial process take its course,” Cpl Cheryl Bush said in a statement.

Kamloops Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Terry Sullivan, says he hopes the charges send a strong signal to students.

“We’ve worked with the RCMP and hopefully the fact they’ve made three arrests yesterday and there’s an ongoing investigation, I am hoping that the fact that they have made these arrests will send a signal to students not just here but in other places that this isn’t just school ground misbehaviour — it could now be a criminal matter and there could be consequences of that.”

Sullivan says the district has an ongoing educational campaign, including guest speakers who work with parents to help them understand technology and why they should be involved.

The police investigation is ongoing.
