SASKATOON – An ovarian cancer survivor is volunteering her time at this weekend’s wellness expo in Saskatoon to teach women about the deadly disease.

A decade ago Helen Ferris was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer and told there was a 30 per cent chance she’d have five years left to live.

Ferris said she had symptoms for at least a year before she was diagnosed and now she wants other women to be aware of the signs as there are no routine screening tests for ovarian cancer.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

“Pretty well most of us can rationalize the symptoms of ovarian cancer, they are very vague, and they mimic other conditions. A lot of times most doctors think its irritable bowel syndrome,” said Helen Ferris, Ovarian Cancer Canada volunteer.

“You need to pay attention to your body, when something isn’t normal, you don’t feel right and you need to see your GP.”
