EU envoy meets Ukrainian president

WATCH: Catherine Ashton says the EU is willing to help to resolve crisis, while opposition leader says President Yanukovych is the biggest impediment to resolution

KYIV, Ukraine – The European Union’s foreign policy chief is meeting Ukraine’s president as the country’s political crisis bogs down in a stalemate and the opposition accuses the leadership of conducting a war of attrition.

Catherine Ashton’s meeting with Viktor Yanukovych was announced on Wednesday on Twitter by her spokeswoman, Maja Kocijancic, without details. She met on Tuesday evening with leaders of the large months-long protests against Yanukovych, over his decision to shun the EU and turn to Moscow.

Ashton’s office has said that the EU is discussing financial aid to prop up Ukraine’s struggling economy. Opposition leader Arseniy Yatsenyuk told The Associated Press that no specifics were put forth in their discussions on Tuesday.

Yatsenyuk charged Yanukovych is “targeting ways how to buy time and drag us into never-ending talks and discussions.”
