Eviction day arrives for Great Plains residents

CALGARY – Residents living in a temporary neighbourhood for displaced flood victims will be packing their bags and moving out on Friday.

The Great Plains housing project, which opened in October, was built to accommodate up to 700 people left homeless by the June flood. However, by early January there were only 45 people living there.

The province announced the closure of camp earlier in January because of low demand and the cost of maintaining the facility.

Some residents say they’re scrambling to get out on time.

“I’m still waiting for my keys,” says Dale Smith. “I don’t understand what the big rush is.”

Around half of the remaining residents are moving to the Saddlebrook temporary housing facility in High River.
