No arena deal anytime soon—Flames Ken King

Calgary Flames president Ken King says there’s no deal imminent for a new home for the team.

Rumours surfaced about a deal for a new arena after a recent episode of Daily Planet, which featured an animated segment of a transforming stadium.

The video depicts an arena with a futuristic folding roof and a Calgary Flames logo on the ice underneath a jumbotron.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

King confirms he has seen the video; it was part of a pitch to the Flames from Populous, a U.S.-based architecture firm that has designed more than half a dozen NHL arenas.

While King says it’s no secret the Flames want to build a new arena, and have for the past seven years, when and where is still very much up in the air.

“I can’t tell you any more about our plans for a new facility other than we are planning one and as we have said, really for years now. At some point we will bring it forward… we are still working on it.”

The Saddledome was built more than 30 years ago for Calgary’s 1988 Winter Olympics and is now showing its age.

Possible locations for a new arena include McMahon Stadium, the west end of downtown and Stampede Park.

King won’t confirm the options—for now he’s concentrating on winning hockey games.
