British Columbians split on Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion

Support for a proposed expansion of the Kinder Morgan pipeline is split among British Columbians.

A new poll from Insights West shows that 48 per cent of British Columbians say they support the pipeline expansion. That’s up 21 points since last year.

43 per cent of British Columbians say they oppose the expansion.

Three out of five people say they are familiar with the expansion plans.

“As was the case last year, the Trans Mountain expansion remains a contentious issue across British Columbia,” says pollster Mario Canseco of Insights West. “The pro-expansion side is still ahead of the anti-expansion side by just five points at the provincial level, but the proportion of residents who have not made up their minds has almost quadrupled.”

Support for the expansion is higher among males (58 per cent) than females (37 per cent).

Younger British Columbians were more likely to be opposed to the pipeline, with those aged 18 to 34 less likely to support the expansion (39 per cent), than those aged 35-to-54 (43 per cent). People aged 55 and over were the most likely to support the expansion. (55 per cent)

The survey was conducted online among 728 B.C. residents.
