SASKATOON – In an effort to keep Saskatoon roads collision free, SGI along with Saskatoon police are focusing on intersection safety in January. Nearly 40 per cent of all collision in the province of Saskatchewan happen at intersections with many centering around disobeying traffic lights or stop signs and distracted driving.

“We’re seeing a lot of individuals not giving enough time to get to work or their next appointment whatever it may be. They’re running that red light or just not paying attention”, said S/Sgt. Tony Nadon with Saskatoon Police Service.

During the winter months, law enforcement officials are reminding motorists to slow down when approaching an intersection even if you have the right of way in case other vehicles are not able to stop.

Also, do not follow too closely and make sure you can clear visibility. “It’s very important you let your car warm up and that all the windows are clear of frost then it gives you full visibility so you can see everything around you,” Nadon said.

The month long focus has replaced the two-day traffic safety blitzes of 2013.
