The Canadian Avalanche Centre is warning people to stay out of the backcountry after a snowmobiler died Saturday near Valemont, B.C.

An avalanche came down at around 12 p.m. at Goat Ridge near the Clemina Creek area, which is about 30 kilometres south of Valemont, a popular destination for snowmobilers.

Search and rescue teams responded, but the conditions were too dangerous for them to go in.

Crews have confirmed one person died and they will recover the body once conditions improve.

The CAC issued a special warning Saturday for most of the B.C. backcountry because of a high risk of avalanches in the backcountry due to weather.

“The main concern is sun and warm, possibly record-breaking temperatures that will destabilize a complex and highly variable snowpack leading to surface slides,” said CAC spokesperson Karl Klassen.

“We’re concerned about ‘blue sky syndrome’ this weekend. It’s common to have a false sense of security in good weather, and this weekend that could lead to underestimating the hazard.”

The CAC is advising every backcountry user to have an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel and to have some training in recognizing avalanche terrain and applying safe backcountry travel techniques.
