River skating trail grows, adds features

WINNIPEG — The city’s river skating trail will offer even more opportunities for fun and exercise this weekend.

Officials at the Forks said Friday that the Red River Mutual trail has been expanded to 5.5 kilometres, with trails on both the Assiniboine and Red rivers.

The trail set the world record in years past for longest continuous outdoor skating rink at a little over 8.6 km, but officials said it’s unlikely they’ll be able to clear that much of the rivers for skating this year.

Crews have also begun installing some of the unique warming huts along the trail. Saturday is promising to be the nicest day of the weekend for outdoor fun, with a high of -4 C and a 30 per cent chance of snow flurries.

Skaters may notice another unique feature rising on the ice of the Red River this weekend.
