Police investigating theft of art created for homeless awareness

HALIFAX – Police are investigating the theft of photos from a Dartmouth art exhibit designed to educate the public about homelessness.

Don Spicer, the executive director of Shelter Nova Scotia, said the photos were stolen Jan. 5 from a display at Alderney Landing.

He said a man and a woman were seen taking the photos down, and when a witness approached them, the man claimed to be the photographer, so the witness left.

The suspects are described as a tall, thin white man with a beard and raspy voice, and a shorter woman with a small-to-medium build and shoulder-length dark hair.

“These photos were intended to be used for ongoing awareness campaigns,” Spicer said in a news release. “They were created through the kindness of the photographer and sponsors. We cannot afford to have them reproduced.”

In total, 15 black and white photos were stolen, each on a vinyl canvas measuring 30 inches by 30 inches.

The photos had been on display since Nov. 21, 2013.

Shelter Nova Scotia is asking anybody with information regarding the photos to contact the Halifax Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.
