University of Saskatchewan students not so interested in TransformUS

SASKATOON – For the past year, the University of Saskatchewan has been making cuts and it’s not over yet. TransformUS has been looking at where the axe could fall next.

Students have been given the chance to make their voices heard but don’t seem to be taking advantage of it.

Wednesday afternoon’s TransformUS meeting specifically for students saw only a third of the seats filled.

“I think the town hall meeting went reasonably well. What we were really trying to do was make sure we provided every conceivable venue to hear comments and reactions to anyone with a vested interest,” said Ilene Busch-Vishniac, University of Saskatchewan president.

While Wednesday was the last town hall meeting, students still have until the end of the month to make their concerns known.

The action phase of the plan begins on May 1. This after transformation task forces worked on reports prioritizing all university programs and support services. Some decisions will be implemented immediately, others may take until 2016 or later.

“We have promised every student here currently enrolled in a degree program that they will have more than ample time to finish those programs, that even if we were to decide to close beloved program “X” that we would make sure we first suspended admission but continued that program until everyone here currently in the program can graduate,” said Busch-Vishniac.
