Health Expo hits Halifax

HALIFAX – We’re almost two weeks into the New Year and it’s time to kick those New Year’s resolutions into high gear. For many of us, losing weight and getting in shape are top priorities.

The Breaking Point Challenge, a Crossfit type competition, was just one of the many things to see and participate in at the Optimyz Health Expo in Halifax. The unique show combines fitness and health with cooking, inspiring speakers and demonstrations. The goal is to get people inspired this New Year.

“We realize that being healthy is not eating healthy, it’s not just working out. It’s a balance of all those things,” said Jonathan Dean, the manager for the Optimyz show.

The health expo is the largest show of its kind in Atlantic Canada and features over 100 exhibitors, some of which are interactive.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“If you’re shy and don’t want to go to the gym for the first time and try your boot camp and make a fool of yourself, come make a fool with us. It’s free, you can try it out and there’s no pressure,” Dean added.

Exercise is obviously important to lead a healthy life and this year, there are some new trends popping up in the fitness world.

“A lot of trends in Crossfit, things like that. There’s also travel rollers, foam rollers, things like that are popular. We also have some accessories for agility and so forth, that’s also pretty popular,” said Vicky Pelletier, a sales associates with Spartan Fitness.

But exercising and eating right are just one part of living a healthy life. Centric Health was offering chair massages, along with feet and posture analysis as a way to re-tune your body.

“You have to look after your body. You have to treat it like you treat your car. So if you’re working out hard all the time, like our cars are every day, you go get a tune up, you go get an oil change. The same with your body, you have to treat it like a machine,” said Jacqueline Johnston, with Centric Health.

This is the sixth year for The Optimyz Health Expo. More than 7,500 are expected to attend the two-day show. There is a full schedule of events planned for Sunday, including a series of motivational speakers.

“We have some people like Jana Webb, who we brought in from Toronto and is the founder of Joga, which is like an athletic type of yoga. She trains professional sports teams all around the world, including NHL, NFL, professional basketball and baseball” said Dean.
