Giant Quebec crater viewed from space

TORONTO – It is one of the most stunning craters on Earth, and it’s right here in Canada.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station photographed the Manicouagan Crater just after the new year.

The crater, one of the most discernible natural formations on Earth, was created by the impact of a five-kilometre wide asteroid that struck the area about 215 million years ago, and is one of the largest preserved impact craters on the planet.

The crater has multiple rings, and measures about 100 km across. The inner ring is the most prominent and contains a 70 km lake which houses the Manicouagan Reservoir, is one of the largest in the province.
