Cyberbullying expert speaks to Saskatchewan students

WARMAN. Sask. – Students tend to feel pressure when dealing with their studies. Unfortunately, cyperbullying has become an added stress. Cyberbullying expert Brian Trainor was a guest speaker in Warman on Thursday to discuss the issue.

“They need to be empathetic, walk in someone else’s shoes, feel what other people are feeling, think before they hit send,” said former police Sgt. Brian Trainor (ret.), now a community education consultant, in his address to students.

“We haven’t listened to these kids, in the past its always been talk down, this is what you will do, finally we are saying to them what do you think you can do. They need to take ownership, that’s how we get them to take ownership,” said Trainor.

A survey at the beginning of the Warman High School year revealed bullying as one of the most popular topics students wanted to deal with.  Having an outside consultant on the issue seemed to resonate with the teens.

“The first thing they do when they wake up is probably get on a device of some sort, the last thing they probably do before they go to bed is they’re probably on a device of some sort. Used to be 20-30 years ago when you were bullied it ended when you were done the school day, now it can happen 24/7,” said Russell Dyck, Warman High School vice principal.

Brian Trainor has been to around 300 schools across the province and beyond, in his efforts to help students minimize the incidents of bullying.
