SASKATOON – A mother accused of killing her son in Saskatoon’s first murder of 2014 was back in court on Tuesday.

Kellie Johnson, 35, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her five-year-old son, Jonathan Vetter.

Vetter was found dead at a home in the 400-block of Avenue R South on Saturday morning after police received a 9-1-1 call for an injured child.

His cause of death has not been released.

Johnson was calm during her first court appearance on Monday and showed no emotion when the murder charge was read.

The Crown also alleged the boy’s father, Myron Vetter, feared for his life during two separate occasions in 2012. It is alleged that both times, Johnson threatened to come to Harris, Sask., where he lives, with an intent to kill.

Harris is approximately 80 kilometres west of Saskatoon.

Vetter’s death is being called an “absolute tragedy” by his uncle, who also questioned why Johnson had custody of the children in the first place.

Johnson was the subject of a missing person investigation in January 2013. There were concerns for her welfare due to a history of mental illness, as well as statements made to family members she may change her appearance to avoid being recognized.

She was found safe four weeks after leaving the Dube Centre on Jan. 2, 2013.

Johnson made a brief appearance in court on Tuesday morning where the case was adjourned until Thursday.
