‘Frozen’ tops weekend box office

TORONTO — Frozen was the top-grossing movie at the box office this weekend in the U.S. and Canada, beating newcomer Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.

The animated fantasy took in $20.7 million, according to studio estimates, bringing its seven-week total to $298 million. Worldwide, Frozen has earned an astonishing $640 million.

The Marked Ones, the only movie to debut this weekend, grossed a respectable $18.2 million to earn second place. Three previous Paranormal Activity movies opened in first place, but in the pre-Halloween period. The original Paranormal Activity opened in third place in 2009.

The Paranormal Activity franchise has made a total of $755 million in cinemas worldwide.

Third spot belonged to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which added $16.2 million to its $230 million domestic haul.

The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle rounded out the Top 5 with $13.4 million and $13.2 million respectively.

Believe, starring Canada’s Justin Bieber, took in another $573,000 for 19th place. The movie has made only $6 million since Christmas Day.

Bieber’s 2011 movie Never Say Never raked in nearly $100 million.
