Ontario boy battling cancer gets unforgettable ‘Get Well’ message

BURLINGTON, Ont. – An Ontario boy battling brain cancer got an unexpected lift for his spirits from some familiar and famous faces.

Friend’s of Nate Perryment’s sister reached out to get well-wishers to send a message to the 13-year-old, who has had to miss school to undergo chemotherapy since being diagnosed in August.

“We just wanted to make Nate happy,” said Mandy Holyoke, one of the creators of the video.

“I was really very emotional and very rare, which we loved,” said co-creator Charley Thomas.

What they wound up with is what could be the best “Get Well” card every, with messages from Canadian astronaut Cmdr. Chris Hadfield, figure skating champions Patrick Chan, Kurt Browning, Josee Chouinard, Paralympic swimmer Andrew Haley and Rick Hansen.

It wasn’t just a simple hello or Merry Christmas that Thomas and Holyoke captured – it was message after message of support and inspiration, including some from people that know what he’s going through.

“I’ve gone through that and I know that it’s not easy on anybody, including your parents, your friends and your family,” Hayley said in the video, mentioning that he had battled cancer.

An inset video of Nate watching the messages shows the boy moved to tears as he watches with his mother.

“It made him cry. It made him laugh,” Nate’s mother Michelle Perryment said. “It was just inspiring. Absolutely amazing.”

“He always says, ‘Mommy, I can’t believe so many people care about me’,” she told Global News.

Although the video was made specifically for Nate, Holyoke and Thomas said they wanted to share the video with the world, so other kids going through tough times know they are not alone.
