WATCH: Salmon Arm Mountie charged in connection with deadly crash

SALMON ARM, BC — A Salmon Arm Mountie is facing dangerous driving charges after a deadly crash in June.

RCMP officer Micah Chan, 36, is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 4th, 2014.

“The explanation I got (from Crown) there wasn’t enough evidence to push a charge forward of dangerous driving causing death,” said Ian Eggen, Courtenay Eggen’s father, Thursday night.  “They had to stay within their boundaries of what they could reasonably expect a conviction on.”

Courtenay Eggen, 21, was coming home from a party in Salmon Arm on June 21st, 2013, when police allege she ran a stop sign.

After the incident, Cpl. Bob Dean told Global Okanagan News a pursuit ensued, but the officer was told to stop the chase.

Eggen ended up crashing into a parked truck and died at the scene.

The officer also ended up losing control of his cruiser, damaging it before going down an embankment nearby.

The Independent Investigations Office was called in to investigate and forwarded its review to Crown.

“I don’t want to see someone falsely convicted of something, but at the same time a young girl died because someone ignored an order to stop the chase,” said Eggen.

Cst. Chan, an RCMP member since 2008, has been placed on administrative duties while the matter is before the courts.
