HALIFAX – Halifax could be getting ready to build two new harbour ferries according to a document released Thursday.
The request for expressions of interest says the city is looking for contractors interested in building the two ferries to service Halifax harbour.
The new ferries would look identical to the ones currently in service. They would also service the same routes to Alderney Landing and Woodside terminals and serve as replacements for the current Dartmouth III and Halifax III vessels.
The document lists 2014-2015 and 2017-2018 as the target dates for the ferries to be completed.

The new ferries would be in addition to the extra ferry Metro Transit is slated to put into operation in the first half of 2014, which is designed to improve service frequency to Woodside.
A.F. Theriault & Son Ltd. was awarded a contract worth $3,987,400 to build the new ferry. The city ran a contest earlier this year to find a name for the new vessel.
Janet Bryson, a spokesperson for the Halifax Regional Municipality, said more than 12,800 people voted to name the ferry, choosing from a list of five vetted choices.
She said a name has been chosen and has been sent to Transport Canada for approval. City staff are not sure how long that approval process could take, or when the ferry’s new name will be announced.
