EDMONTON – An emergency medical services worker was killed in a head-on collision in northern Alberta on Monday.
The accident happened at about 11 a.m. on Highway 2 just west of McLennan, about 440 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
An eastbound truck was hauling empty propane tanks when its trailer separated and crossed into the opposite lanes and struck an ambulance heading the other way. The driver, identified by Alberta Health Services as EMS worker John O’Mahoney, died at the scene.
Three other occupants in the ambulance – another EMS worker, a patient and a family member – were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Alberta Health Services says EMS stations throughout the province will lower their flags to half mast in memory of Mahoney.
