LLOYDMINSTER, Alta. – A pilot is dead after a small plane crashed into a house in eastern Alberta.
Transportation Safety Board spokesman John Lee says the single-engine Cessna 210 crashed on Saturday afternoon after taking off from the airport in Lloydminster.
Lee says the plane hit the ground, slid and came to rest against a house.
He says the pilot, who was the only person on board the plane, didn’t survive.
RCMP say one person was in the house and was not injured.
Sgt. Jamie Hubbert says damage to the house was minimal, but it was a shock for the person inside.
“It’s not one of those things you expect to have happen on a Saturday afternoon,” Hubbert said.
Safety board investigators from Edmonton arrived in Lloydminster to investigate the crash and were on scene Sunday morning.
Police said the weather was poor at the time of the crash.
Hubbert said the plane’s flight plan stated that it was on its way to High River, south of Calgary, and he said he believed it was registered to J.W.L. Engineering.
RCMP have not released the pilot’s name but say his family has been notified. Hubbert says the pilot was in his early 60s and from the Calgary area.
Police say his body has been brought to Edmonton for an autopsy.
