A former RCMP Sgt. has been given a conditional discharge for shoplifting, 12 months probation and 30 hours of community service for the charge of theft under $5,000.
Derek Brassington, ex Sergeant and top investigator with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, quit the force earlier this year after he was charged for his conduct during the Surrey Six murder investigation.
The charge of theft under $5,000 relates to an off-duty incident in late March, when Brassington stole a $70 hoodie from Burnaby 8 Rinks.
He was suspended from the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team in 2010.
It was an emotional day in court as Brassington cried and his defence said he was devastated by his suspension from IHIT.
He is currently receiving treatment for psychological conditions.
Brassington said in court that he always wanted to be a police officer and expects to be held to a higher level. He recognized he failed in that respect and apologized to his family and the RCMP for what he has done. He also offered to the judge that he could do some home renovations as part of his community service as he good at that kind of work.
Brassington is also alleged to have had an inappropriate relationship with a potential witness in the Surrey Six case.He and two other officers were criminally charged with breach of trust.
