A three-year-old Mission boy is expected to make a full recovery after he fell through some ice and into freezing water yesterday morning.
Mission RCMP say the toddler had been playing outside when he followed the family dog, a Doberman puppy, out onto a frozen pond. The ice gave way beneath them and the boy and dog fell through.
The boy’s mother was watching from a window inside the home and raced to rescue him.
Rescue crews think the young boy was under water for up to five minutes.
The mom brought him inside and called 911. She was able to give him CPR until help arrived.
The puppy did not survive.
BC Ambulance brought in an air ambulance, and the boy was airlifted to Children’s Hospital with strong vital signs. He was also breathing on his own.
“BC Paramedics were on scene with the child for quite a long time, basically built a hospital room in the middle of that living room and did an extraordinary job,” says fire chief Larry Watkinson.
