Extreme cold weather warning across B.C.

Bundle up. Environment Canada is advising people to brace for the extreme cold. Temperatures are dropping to record or near record levels in Metro Vancouver as arctic air sweeps the province.

The cold snap has forced the shutdown of all grass playing fields in the Metro Region.  A majority of Turf fields are also closed, with the exception of West Vancouver, Vancouver, and New Westminster, where it remains at ‘use at your own discretion.’

Food trucks are also feeling the impact of the low temperatures. Yasmin Ghaffari from Taser Grilled Cheese Sandwiches says her food truck was decommissioned for three days because her hot water tank cracked.  She says other food trucks were also out of business for a few days for the same reason.

“I pushed my cart inside my kitchen to thaw out.” says Ghaffari. “It’s been cold before. But not for this long. There’s no reprieve from the cold.”

Calls to plumbers and heating technicians has doubled from homeowners and businesses who have poorly insulated pipes.

To protect your home from freezing temperatures, professionals recommend you have your furnace serviced regularly and that you weatherproof windows and doors. To keep pipes from bursting, they suggest that opening up your tap to get some air, and shut off the valve inside your home.

Temperatures will continue to plummet across the province, with areas in the Fraser Valley dropping below -20 C. with the wind chill.
