WINNIPEG – Fire engulfed a St.Vital family garage early Friday morning destroying all their Christmas gifts.
“We thought it was a good hiding spot,” said Kevin Kowal.
At 6 a.m. Friday a paper delivery driver knocked on his door on Greenwood Avenue, “he said your garage is on fire,” said Kowal.
He and his partner Robyn Burnet had finished Christmas shopping on Black Friday spending roughly $1500 on gifts for their 10 year old girl and 6 year old boy and nieces and nephews.
However, their insurance expired two days ago, “we thought we’d wait until January to renew, boy was that a mistake,” said Kowal.
Having lost gifts and so much more, none of it covered by insurance, Robyn says Christmas will be different this year, “it’ll be about family, what it’s meant to be.”
The family warns others to not let their insurance expire, saying this was a lesson learned.
