WINNIPEG – Snow and a water main break in St. Vital are expected to cause traffic problems on Thursday morning.

The break closed the intersection of Dakota Street and Beliveau Road as crews worked to repair the water main. The intersection reopened shortly before 7 a.m. but the road was slippery with frozen ice.

Crews had difficulty turning the water off and it was still flowing out to St. Mary’s Road at 5:15 a.m., police said.

Northbound St. Mary’s Road was closed briefly after the 12:30 a.m. break, but it was reopened by 5 a.m.

Police were on the scene and expected traffic delays.

Dakota Collegiate and Victor Mager School are both located at the intersection. The schools are open, as are other Louis Riel School Division schools, although buses aren’t running in the Sage Creek area due to the snow.

The major snowfall over the past 24 hours also caused traffic problems on busy routes through the city.

A snowfall warning ended early Thursday morning after 12 to 15 centimetres of snow fell in Winnipeg.

Sprague received 25 cm of snow, while Kenora and Steinbach were hit by 20 to 25 cm.

Environment Canada warned that winds of 40 to 60 kilometres per hour are expected Thursday, so blowing snow will cause reduced visibility in the Red River Valley.

Lakeshore, Seine River, Hanover, Evergreen, Sunrise, Border Land, Interlake, Red River Valley and Lord Selkirk school divisions have cancelled classes on Thursday.

Winnipeg traffic can be checked at the real-time Global traffic page.

Check the Manitoba road report for highway conditions. It showed highways were snow-covered and partly snow-covered with fair visibility at 7:15 a.m.

There were reports that cars had become stuck in snow in the Bridgewater Forest and Sage Creek neighbourhoods overnight.
