Over 200 birds euthanized after landing in northern Alberta tailings ponds

EDMONTON – Syncrude Canada is promising to look into another case of dead birds on its toxic tailings ponds in Alberta’s oilsands.

The Alberta government reported yesterday that 230 birds had to be put down after landing on the ponds on Monday night.

An undetermined number of birds also landed on tailings ponds owned by Suncor and Shell, and had to be put down.

Syncrude says all of its devices to keep birds off the toxic pit were working and the company is blaming freezing rain for forcing them to land.

Just last Friday, Syncrude was ordered to pay three (m) million dollars for a 2008 case in which 16-hundred birds were killed.

Alberta Environment Minister Rob Renner calls the new case of dead birds "discouraging."

Federal N-D-P environment critic Linda Duncan calls it "reprehensible" and says it’s time to shut down the tailings ponds.
