Hostage situation resolved at Edmonton Remand Centre: police

EDMONTON – The Edmonton Police Service says a hostage situation at the Edmonton Remand Centre Sunday was resolved peacefully.

Police were called to the facility in north Edmonton around 12:30 p.m.

EPS spokesperson Clair Seyler said one inmate had taken another inmate hostage in a cell.

Hostage negotiators were called to the scene.

The situation was resolved around 4:00 p.m. Neither inmate was hurt.

Alberta Justice and Solicitor General spokesman Dan Laville said a weapon was involved, but said he wouldn’t divulge details because of a pending police investigation.

The new facility — located at 127 Street near the Anthony Henday — opened in April 2013. It has a maximum bed capacity of 1,952.
