Pointe-St-Charles coalition joins protest against Quebec austerity budget

MONTREAL – A coalition of several community groups in Pointe-St-Charles has joined the protest against the Quebec government’s austerity budget.

About one hundred people came out Thursday to support the neighbourhood’s community education programs.

Protestors with Carrefour D’Education Populair De Pointe St-Charles said the Pointe – as it is sometimes called – is one of the poorest parts of the city.

They insist it needs support to continue to run its specialized education programs, one of which includes mature students who were not able to succeed in the regular school system.

Organizers point out these people often live isolated, impoverished lives.

“The government is supposed to have a solution for us and let us live in our building where we have been for forty years,” Roger Leclerc told Global News.
